About Leslie #

I moved to the Pacific Northwest for my 16th birthday where I instantly felt at one with the area. Although my professional journey officially began in the year 2020, my dedication to nurturing and guiding children spans over two decades. Balancing the care of my five vibrant children, who continually keep me on my toes, has been an incredibly rewarding endeavor. When I’m not fully immersed in my academic pursuits, you can often find me passionately engrossed in the art of crafting costumes, tending plants, or indulging in my love for running.

I believe that teaching is a collaborative relationship between students and educators. Central’s program emphasis on hands-on experiences and field-based learning is particularly appealing. I am hopeful that these experiences will help me develop a deep understanding of the challenges faced by neurodiverse students and refine my teaching techniques to ensure their success.

Research

Student Impact

During my mentorship program, I had the chance to implement the concepts learned in school. Over the year I collaborated with shareholders to implement curriculum and accommodations. These examples will showcase times where adhered to the district’s prescribed curriculum and also created my own curriculum. One of the most impactful examples shows how my mentor teacher and I worked to address a writing need. This data driven intervention had a big impact on students.

Academics

During my Master’s program at Central Washington University, I’ve had the opportunity to do research and design some classwork that hasn’t yet been implemented. One standout is an inquiry-based lesson titled “What Impact Did Colonization Have on Native Indian Tribes?” This project aims to help students explore the effects of colonization on Native American communities through research and critical thinking. The lessons include interactive discussions, multimedia resources, and hands-on activities to keep things engaging.

Teaching Philosophy

I believe that education is most successful when students are active participants in their learning. As a teacher, I see myself as a facilitator, guiding students through explorations to make their own discoveries through critical thinking. Drawing from constructivist pedagogy, I recognize the importance of hands-on experiences, inquiry-based learning, and project-based approaches to keep students engaged and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them. Students are in school to learn how to function in society, but also to question how that society functions.
